A special place for hockey moms (& even hockey dads) to share advice and experiences!
It is a fair, even-handed, noble adjustment of things, that while there is infection in disease and sorrow, there is nothing in the world so irresistibly contagious as laughter and good-humor.

Whenever possible, I think staying ahead on school work is the answer. Especially when it comes to long range projects.
The rule in our house has always been that the homework gets done first. Both kids have activities after supper. No reason it can't be done from 2:00 when they get home till 6:00 when they are out the door again. Except when it requires the computer and I don't get home till 4:30. This has proved to work for us, and they have seen that their report cards always have their homework done. Can make a C+ a B-!
I wonder if things are different between households where both parents work and those where at least one parent is able to be home on weekday afternoons?
The rule in our house. Homework done the moment you walk through the door! It's huge and it helps!

I think I hate homework as much as my kids, and I am a teacher! We also have the rule - do it as soon as you get home and have a snack. No TV or telephone until it is done. We also have the luxury of a parent being home most afternoons, so it is not too difficult to enforce. We also have many discussions (especially on Sunday nights...) about the consequences for not completing the homework, or not giving one's best effort. It really is a struggle, but we just have to keep giving the same message (and praying for summer!)
I am very lucky! My boys (and through no effort from me) have figured out the best hockey scholarships to the best schools are connected with grades. One is a first grader (and really wants to play for Boston (? who knows why except maybe Miracle?) And an 8th grader now getting 4.0 because he wants to go to UND to play and then to become an architect. Both desire to play NHL...mommy thinks they can! But both have back up plans! LIKE wow, I'm 44 and I am not totally sure I am doing my dream job!!! It's awesome the focus hockey players have if they really desire it! As I said, it's them! Not me!
